CarBuddy: A Kids' Travel Overlay App

Having been a kid and hearing from parents around me, long car rides often involve the constant question, 'Are we there yet?'. CarBuddy is my solution: an Android app that provides a fun, visual overlay for children to track their journey's progress. Parents input a destination time, and the app displays a timeline with fun customisable themes (like space, a dog, a submarine, etc.) showing a character moving towards the finish line. It's designed to be engaging and simple, giving kids a clear sense of progress and making trips more peaceful for everyone. As it's a touchless overlay, they can continue to use the device as they want, whether this is playing games or watching a show or movie, you can touch right through the ovelay.
Additionally I made the overlay only adjustable from within the CarBuddy app and it comes with a Parental Lock.

Challenges & Solutions

A major challenge was creating a UI that looked good on all devices and orientations. Working with custom images on devices with very different resolutions was a challenge making everything still look good. Making sure that every background was visible, fitting and not interrupting anything.

Future Plans

One of my ideas is to make a Google Maps integration so it can sync the actual remaining time.
And of course always more themes, the more options, the more they stay stimulated and happy.
